On some days, this is my favorite Prince song. Also loved piano and a microphone. Wish he’d done more stripped down stuff during his career. Really let’s the melodies shine.
I’ll admit I never even knew the song until Prince died, as you say, in April. If Purple Rain was the obvious memorial song, this seemed like the stealth connoisseur’s pick. Meshell Ndegleocello’s cover of it is wonderful.
I got to see Prince perform on the Piano and a Microphone tour. I was at his 6th to last ever concert. It was electrifying and brilliant but it was clear he was not in good health. He had to be wheeled over to the piano as he was unable to walk. It did not seem to limit his performance -- he was in impeccable voice and you could feel his complete immersion into the music. All of us in the crowd were in it too.
"Sometimes it Snows in April" was saved for the 2nd encore, followed by "Purple Rain." I am so grateful that I got to see him a half dozen times, from giant arenas to a small club where we had to check our cell phones at the door.
Great piece. I have tried to write about Prince a few different times and I was never happy with my words. Even 7 years after his death I struggle to find them.
I did see Princess perform in concert a year later and it was fun and a party, but nowhere close to what the real experience was.
I was never into Prince beyond a few hits, and it's only recently that i've started investigating the albums by The Purple Imp (copyright Smash Hits.) His songs often give no indication of the real man, so it's refreshing to hear a song like this.
After loving Purple Rain and owning Around the World in a Day and liking it, I assumed this album would be a slam dunk and bought it, too. (the year it came out) Other than a couple of songs it just didn't do it for me. I'm listening to it now and it's still not any better for me. But "Sometimes It Snows In April" is one I remember.
